The reasons to choose APD rebreathers, the Inspiration, Evolution and the Evolution+
When I decided to do diving on Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR), I had to make a decision about the unit I will use. This is not a easy decision, especially because the training is unit specific and the cost of the rebreather is relatively high. So if you don’t like it, then you do not go to the next shop and take an another one from the shelf.
For that reason I did a quiet extensive research. I asked myself and others the following questions:
- How much does it costs?
I was looking for a rebreather which will have good value for money. The APD units are not the cheapest on the market, but not the most expensive ones neither. The next points will explain why.
- How will I receive service parts?
To order the spare parts I have nothing to do, just register online and fill up my shopping cart with virtually anything I need for my rebreather. The payment and shipping is simple and swift. They produce 95% of all part in house, so they do not depend on external suppliers.
Additionally this a company with long past, not a one person in garage built unit. So there will parts tomorrow too. Just read the about page of APD.
Where can I service it?
The great news are that many parts can be replaced by user itself. If in doubt just contact me, as I am an Authorized Service Technician of APD and will be more than happy to help you out. If you would have an issue with electronics, that is the only case when you would have to send back the lid to the factory.
- How good is the customer service if any?
The customer service is very responsive, fast and professional. I asked about this more APD units owners before deciding to choose this rebreather. I asked also about other brands but no one could bring up such good examples.
- How safe are the units?
Here you can think about the “slogan” you might have heard before: The Yellow Box of Death.
Let me ask you a question: if nearly every car would be Volkswagen and it would be yellow, what are the chances that in the next accident you hear of, will involve an yellow Volkswagen?
To be fair, you have to look behind the scenes and analyse the statistics properly. The safety is continuously improving. Most of the fatal incidents where the result of human error, negligence or pursuing of the limits, and not within the intentional and proper use.
Do not forget, that we are talking here about technical diving, and you as such one did accept some higher risk by going this way.
- Who are their customers?
The APD is the supplier of military, commercial diving, and public safety diving customers as well. If this industries are happy with their products, then very likely you will be too.
- Compliance with training organisations
Nearly every diving organisation which includes CCR training in their program, is teaching on this units. Even the most restrictive organization, PADI, approved the units to be used during their training programs.
- How difficult is to travel with it?
Travelling with rebreather is not the easiest thing ever. Fortunately the APD units are so widely used, that you will realize, that in most of the locations you go, you will be able to rent tanks, and the spare parts will be available too.
I hope this reasoning makes easier for you to make the right decision. If you need any more information on this subject, please do not hesitate to contact me.
